What this site is for

WittyNames is a free name generator. People come here when they need a name and the blank field is staring back at them: a group chat that has been called “New Group” for three months, a five-a-side team that plays on Thursdays, a WiFi network the neighbours can see, a fantasy league, a pub quiz table. We give you a list to react to, because reacting to twenty names is much easier than inventing one.

How the site works

Everything runs in your browser. There is no account, no e-mail wall and no download. You pick a category, press the button, and read what comes out. Nothing you type into the generator is sent to us or stored anywhere.

Where the names come from

Names on the site come from three places. Some are built by the generator from word patterns — a structure plus a word list, recombined. Some are written by hand for a specific category, because a bowling team and a book club do not want the same kind of joke. Some are suggested by visitors and go into a list after we have read them.

What we care about

• Usable, not just clever. A name that will not fit in a chat title field is not a good name. We keep suggestions short enough to survive real character limits.
• Safe to say out loud. We filter slurs, harassment and anything aimed at a real person. A joke that only works by insulting somebody is not on this site.
• Honest about the limits. A generator produces combinations, not inspiration. We say so rather than promising a name will be perfect.

What we are not

We are not affiliated with any messaging app, game, sports league or router manufacturer. Where we mention one by name, it is only so you know which character limit or naming rule applies. We do not check whether a name is free to use as a trademark or a business name — see our Disclaimer for what that means for you.
